How it works: The CI Mid is a contemporary take on a timeless shape, born from an enjoyable collaboration with Devon Howard. Based in Southern California, Howard has spent the last twenty years surfing and fine-tuning egg-influenced boards that fall into what many surfers classify as the midlength category.

Drawing inspiration from the smooth, elongated rail lines of classic egg and single-fin surfboards, the CI Mid blends that traditional aesthetic with the precision, responsiveness, and freedom enabled by modern Merrick design elements. Its refined, egg-style outline features a low entry rocker and slightly forward foam distribution, allowing for easy paddling and smooth, natural trim speed. Performance comes from updated design details such as a double-barrel concave, a progressively accelerated rocker, and firm, subtly tucked rails running through and off the tail—giving the board the ability to generate speed, release, and maneuver effortlessly.

As a dependable, versatile board, the CI Mid excels in weaker, flatter, and smaller waves, but truly distinguishes itself from other eggs and midlengths in shoulder-high to near double-overhead point breaks. In these conditions, surfers can execute long, flowing turns with confidence, control, and consistent speed.

The understated logo comes directly from the Channel Islands Archives, originally used by Al Merrick in the early 1970s. Every CI Mid is built with premium, colorful resin work and features a durable glassing schedule of 6-4oz on the deck and 6oz on the bottom.

Understanding that fin choice is critical to a board’s performance, Channel Islands collaborated closely with Devon Howard and True Ames Fins to develop a custom 2 + 1 fin setup. This configuration complements the CI Mid’s high-performance capabilities while remaining adaptable across a broad range of wave conditions through simple center-fin adjustments.
